Coaching is an art that requires mastery of several competencies. Over the years, many coaches that I have trained have asked me how to employ the core competencies effectively. I have developed the COACH™ framework to help coaches who are beginning on their journey and even more experienced coaches to refine their craft. The COACH™ Framework is a tool that can help you achieve this mastery. The COACH™ Framework integrates the ICF Core Competencies to aid the coaching process.

Why is learning the COACH™ framework foundational to coaching?

Learning the COACH™ framework is foundational to coaching because it provides a clear and structured process for coaches to follow during their coaching engagement. This framework integrates the 11 core competencies of coaching, ensuring that coaches have a well-rounded approach to coaching that takes into account various factors and techniques.

The COACH™ framework is client-centered, meaning that it focuses on the client's goals and desired outcomes. The framework encourages coaches to establish a strong rapport and trust with their clients, which is essential to creating a safe and comfortable coaching environment.

Additionally, the COACH™ framework emphasizes the importance of awareness and communication. These 5 elements form the foundation of every effective coaching conversation. In the subsequent paragraphs we will dive deeper to learn about how these 5 elements are employed in a coaching conversation.

As a coach, the ability to establish a strong connection with your clients is critical to the success of your coaching engagement. In fact, it is the first step in the COACH™ Framework, which is designed to help coaches engage their clients in a thought-provoking and creative process to achieve the desired outcome.

Connecting with your client requires building a rapport, trust, and intimacy. This can only happen when there is a strong ethical foundation in place, which helps to establish a safe space where the client can open up and share their thoughts. As a coach, it is essential to develop a deep sense of empathy towards your client to ensure that they feel comfortable and secure enough to open up about their goals and objectives.

One of the most effective ways to establish a strong connection with your client is to actively listen to them. This means not only hearing what they are saying but also understanding the emotions, motivations, and intentions behind their words. By actively listening, you can build trust and rapport with your client and help them to feel heard and understood.

Another important aspect of establishing a connection is to create an environment where your client feels safe to explore their thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment or criticism. This means creating a non-judgmental space where your client can be vulnerable and share their true thoughts and feelings. Element 2 - Outcome

Coaching is a powerful tool that helps individuals achieve their desired outcomes. As a coach, your role is to partner the client towards the goal they want to achieve. The second step in the COACH™ Framework is Outcome, which is the key to a successful coaching engagement.

The Outcome step requires coach to partner the client to define what is the specific outcome they would like to achieve for the session. And measure that against the end of session outcomes. There are several outcomes in the coaching conversation and in my other articles I will share more about them.

Once the goal is defined, coaches must help the client identify the obstacles that may stand in their way. This could be anything from limiting beliefs to external factors such as lack of resources or time. Coaches must help the client to see these obstacles as opportunities for growth and to develop a plan to overcome them.

The plan must include actionable steps that the client can take to achieve their desired outcome. Coaches must ensure that these steps are realistic, achievable, and aligned with the client's values and priorities. Additionally, coaches must help clients to create a system of accountability to ensure that they stay on track towards their goal.

The Outcome step in the COACH™ Framework is critical to the success of the coaching engagement. It helps coaches to guide clients towards their desired outcome by creating actionable steps, planning, managing progress and accountability. By mastering this step, coaches can help their clients achieve their goals and create positive and lasting change in their lives.

Element 3 - Awareness

Coaching is a powerful process that helps clients achieve their goals and become the best version of themselves. One of the key components of effective coaching is awareness. The COACH™ Framework emphasizes the importance of awareness as the third step in the coaching process.

Coaches must be aware of their biases, judgments, presuppositions, and assumptions to make logical interpretations. Unchecked biases or assumptions can affect the coach's ability to help clients explore their thoughts and feelings freely. Being aware of these biases allows the coach to remain neutral, ask powerful questions and help clients gain insights that might otherwise have been missed.

Developing awareness at the client's level is also crucial. Clients need to understand themselves better and the challenges they face to achieve their goals. Coaches must help clients create a sense of self-awareness and clarity in order to identify their goals and objectives. This clarity helps the coach and the client identify the best course of action to take to achieve their desired outcomes.

Creating awareness requires active listening and powerful questioning techniques that help clients explore their thoughts and feelings more deeply. Coaches must learn to ask questions that challenge the client's thinking and encourage them to look at things from different perspectives. This can be achieved by asking open-ended questions that require clients to think and reflect on their experiences.

Developing awareness is a vital component of effective coaching. The COACH™ Framework recognizes this and emphasizes its importance in the coaching process. Coaches who are self-aware and help clients develop awareness can help clients achieve their goals and become the best version of themselves.

Element 4 - Communicate

Communication is an essential aspect of coaching, and it is the fourth step in the COACH™ Framework. Coaching is all about helping the client achieve their goals and objectives, and effective communication is crucial in achieving this. Coaches need to communicate clearly and effectively to elicit the desired state for the client.

Active listening is a crucial communication technique that coaches must master to be effective in their role. This technique involves paying close attention to what the client is saying and using verbal and nonverbal cues to show the client that they are being heard. Through active listening, coaches can identify the root cause of the client's issue and help them come up with effective solutions.

Powerful questioning is another communication technique that coaches must master. The purpose of powerful questioning is to help the client explore their thoughts and feelings freely. By asking open-ended questions, coaches can encourage the client to think deeply about their situation and help them gain a better understanding of their goals and objectives.

Direct communication is also a vital skill that coaches must possess. Coaches must be able to communicate their feedback to the client in a way that is precise and tactful. Direct communication allows the coach to give honest and constructive feedback that helps the client to see things from a different perspective and work towards achieving their desired outcome.

Element 5 - Here

The fifth and final step in the COACH™ Framework is HERE. As a coach, it's important to be present both consciously and subconsciously during coaching sessions. This means giving full attention and being open to the client's situation. It's not just about showing up physically, but also mentally and emotionally.

Being present in the coaching process helps the coach establish a strong connection with the client, which is critical to the success of the coaching engagement. It creates an environment of trust and safety, allowing the client to open up and share their thoughts and feelings freely.

To be here is to be fully engaged in the coaching process, without any distractions or preconceptions. This helps the coach stay malleable and flexible in their approach, adapting to the client's unique needs and challenges. Each client is different, and it's important for coaches to approach each client with a clean slate, without any preconceived labels, stereotypes, or boxes.

In addition, being present during the coaching session also helps the coach pick up on subtle cues and body language from the client, which can provide valuable insights into their thoughts and emotions. This, in turn, can help the coach tailor their coaching approach to better serve the client.

Being present and fully engaged in the coaching process is an essential part of the COACH™ Framework. It helps coaches establish a strong connection with their clients, adapt to their unique needs and challenges, and ultimately, help them achieve their desired outcomes.

How do we apply the framework in our coaching practice?

Begin first with journalling and reflecting on each one of the segments of the framework. You may use the following reflective questions to help you in your self-reflection.
